In order to create a basis for the development of appropriate requirements the European Commission mandates preparatory studies for every product group.

These studies have to follow a common structure and methodology. The original Methodology for the Ecodesign of Energy-using Products (MEEuP) was replaced in 2011 by the Methodology for the Ecodesign of Energy-related Products (MEErP). A further study named Material-efficiency Ecodesign Report and Module to the Methodology for the Ecodesign of Energy-related Products (MEErP) was completed in 2013 in order to improve the possibilities to take into account material-related aspects through the methodology.

Preparatory studies are subdivided into seven tasks as shown in the picture below (click to enlarge).
